UN Chief Condemns Deadly Mosque Attack in Syria’s Homs

United Nations, Dec 2025 : United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly and unequivocally condemned the deadly terrorist attack on a mosque in the Syrian city of Homs, reiterating that violence against civilians and places of worship is completely unacceptable under any circumstances.

According to a statement issued by his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, the attack took place during Friday prayers at the Ali Bin Abi Talib Mosque, located in the Wadi al-Dahab neighbourhood of Homs. The blast struck inside the mosque, causing multiple casualties and triggering panic among worshippers.

Guterres stressed that attacks targeting civilians, especially in sacred spaces, constitute grave violations of international humanitarian principles. He underscored that those responsible for the attack must be swiftly identified and held accountable through due process. “The Secretary-General reiterates that attacks against civilians and places of worship are unacceptable,” the statement said.

The UN chief extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and expressed deep sympathy for the injured. He also wished all those wounded in the blast a speedy and full recovery.

Syrian health authorities confirmed that the death toll from the explosion has risen to eight. Initial reports had indicated that at least five people were killed and 21 others injured in the blast, but officials later revised the figures as rescue and medical operations continued.

Najib al-Naasan, Director of Referral, Ambulance and Emergency Services at Syria’s Health Ministry, told state-run SANA news agency that the reported toll was preliminary. He said emergency teams rushed the injured to nearby hospitals immediately after the explosion to provide urgent medical care.

Security forces and medical personnel cordoned off the area surrounding the mosque as investigations were launched to determine the nature and perpetrators of the attack. Authorities also tightened security measures in and around the neighbourhood to prevent further incidents.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed the explosion but said it was still unclear whether the blast was caused by a suicide attack or another explosive device. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
