CM Prem Singh Golay inaugurates Indrani bridge over Teesta River

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) inaugurated a 300-foot Bailey Suspension Bridge (BSB) over the Teesta River on Monday. The bridge, constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) under Project Swastik at Singtham, replaces the Indrani bridge, which was destroyed by catastrophic flash floods in October 2023. The destruction had severely disrupted road connectivity, cutting off the northern and southern regions of Sikkim from the rest of the country.

In his address, Chief Minister Tamang underscored the state government’s commitment to restoring road links and providing relief to those affected by the natural disaster. He praised the BRO for its vital role in rebuilding the state’s infrastructure, emphasizing the importance of the new bridge in reconnecting the region and supporting recovery efforts.

Following the flash floods, the Sikkim government quickly prioritized the construction of suspension Bailey bridges to restore connectivity. A joint survey was conducted in collaboration with GRSE, leading to the signing of an MoU for the bridge’s construction. After securing the necessary land approvals and clearances, Project Swastik began work on the 300-foot Bailey Suspension Bridge at the former Indrani Bridge site in mid-May. The abutments were completed by July 30, and the bridge’s superstructure was finished within just 10 days.

The completion of this bridge marks a significant milestone in South Sikkim’s recovery from the devastating floods. Not only does it restore critical connectivity, but it also lays the groundwork for enhanced economic and social development in the Namchi region. The BRO’s rapid and efficient construction, completed in just over two months, demonstrates its dedication to serving the nation, particularly in challenging terrains. Senior state administration dignitaries and BRO officials from Project Swastik were present at the inauguration ceremony.
