New Beginning of the Blue Revolution in Sukma District: Shrimp Farming Along with Fish to Become the Basis of Farmers’ Prosperity

Raipur, January 2026 : Sukma district, located at the farthest end of Chhattisgarh, is now setting new benchmarks in the fields of agriculture and fisheries. Under the visionary leadership and guidance of Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai, efforts are being made to promote fisheries alongside traditional paddy cultivation. In this direction, a significant step towards the Blue Revolution has been taken with the introduction of shrimp farming in five gram panchayats of Sukma district, as per the directions of the District Collector.

According to available information, a total of 17 ponds in the gram panchayats of Bhelwapal, Jhapra, Gongla, Muratonda, and Gadirasa have been selected for shrimp farming. To provide farmers with scientific training, a special demonstration unit has also been established at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Muratonda.

Recently, a team of experts, including fisheries specialist Dr. Sanjay Singh Rathore, D.L. Kashyap from the Fisheries Department, and the NRLM Janpad Sukma coordinator, inspected the selected ponds and provided technical guidance to farmers.

Until now, fish species such as Catla, Rohu, Grass Carp, and Patla have been commonly cultured in the district. The introduction of shrimp farming is expected to significantly increase the income of local farmers and fishermen. This initiative will not only give Sukma a new identity in the field of fisheries production but will also create new employment opportunities, strengthening the rural economy of the region.
