Vande Bharat Sleeper Express to Connect Guwahati and Kolkata, Boost Northeast–Eastern India Rail Link
Guwahati, Jan 2026 : Indian Railways is set to launch the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express between Guwahati and Kolkata in the near future, marking a significant step forward in long-distance overnight rail travel and strengthening connectivity between the Northeast and Eastern India. Railway officials said the new service will offer a faster, safer and more comfortable travel option for passengers on this crucial route.
According to Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) officials, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express will operate with a modern 16-coach rake and have a total passenger capacity of 823. The train’s composition has been designed to cater to diverse travel needs, with 11 AC 3-Tier coaches, four AC 2-Tier coaches and one First Class AC coach. This mix is expected to provide enhanced comfort and flexibility for passengers across various income groups.
The new-generation sleeper train has been developed with a strong focus on passenger comfort and convenience. It will feature ergonomically designed cushioned berths, advanced suspension systems for smoother rides, and noise-reduction technology to ensure a peaceful overnight journey. Automatic sliding doors with vestibules, along with a modern Passenger Information System, will further improve the overall travel experience.
Special attention has also been given to accessibility and hygiene. The Vande Bharat Sleeper Express will include dedicated provisions for Divyangjan passengers, contemporary toilet facilities, and advanced disinfection technology to maintain high standards of cleanliness and sanitation throughout the journey.
Safety remains a core feature of the train’s design. The service will be equipped with the Kavach automatic train protection system, emergency passenger talk-back units, and a state-of-the-art driver’s cab fitted with advanced control systems. These features aim to enhance operational safety and provide passengers with greater confidence during long-distance travel.
With its aerodynamic exterior and refined interiors, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express reflects the latest advancements in indigenous rail engineering and design. The introduction of this service is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Assam and West Bengal. In Assam, districts such as Kamrup Metropolitan and Bongaigaon are likely to benefit, while in West Bengal, key districts including Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Malda, Murshidabad, Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly and Howrah will gain improved rail access.
Beyond passenger convenience, the new service is expected to support regional mobility and contribute to economic growth by promoting trade, tourism and people-to-people connectivity between the two regions.
