Over 40 Murders in Delhi in January Alone; Firing, Assaults, and Harassment Now Routine – Sanjeev Jha
January 2026 : The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has launched a sharp attack on the BJP over Delhi’s deteriorating law-and-order situation. Senior AAP leader and MLA Sanjeev Jha accused the four-engine BJP government of turning the national capital into a haven for criminals. “More than 40 murders have already taken place in Delhi this January alone. Open firing, assaults, and harassment have become commonplace. Criminals roam the city without fear. The latest example is the daylight murder of AAP worker Rachna Yadav, just a few meters from CM Rekha Gupta’s residence,” he said.
Jha added that AAP representatives have repeatedly requested meetings with the Delhi Police Commissioner to address law-and-order concerns, but no response has been received so far.
Speaking at a press conference at the AAP headquarters alongside MLA Kuldeep Kumar, Jha emphasized that Delhi, the national capital, is increasingly becoming a city ruled by fear. “Since January 1, 2026, over 40 murders have been recorded. Open firing occurs on city streets, and harassment has become routine. Yet this multi-engine government remains indifferent. Before elections, they promised Delhi residents that a double-engine government would solve the city’s challenges. Instead, this multi-engine government has brought multiple problems,” he said.
He highlighted the Shalimar Bagh incident, where an RWA head, who had previously witnessed her husband’s murder, was killed before she could testify in court, illustrating criminals’ growing audacity. “Extortion, ransom, and threats have become normal. Businesses and individuals face direct intimidation, including gunfire at their homes,” Jha said.
Addressing CM Rekha Gupta, Jha questioned why criminal activity continues unchecked. “If AAP raises concerns, FIRs are filed against us, but those committing crimes daily remain free. Every corner of Delhi has become unsafe,” he said, citing the recent murder in Mangolpuri and incidents of assault and harassment in Laxmi Nagar.
MLA Kuldeep Kumar reinforced Jha’s statements, listing recent violent crimes: from the January 1 murders in Narela, Sultanpuri, and Mangolpuri, to the killings of Rachna Yadav on January 10, and multiple knife attacks, shootings, and extortion incidents throughout the city. He stressed that criminals operate with impunity due to their connections with BJP leaders, and residents live in constant fear.
Kuldeep Kumar called on the BJP government, the Home Minister, and Delhi Police to restore safety for women, citizens, and traders. He emphasized immediate measures like police checkpoints and stricter enforcement in parks and markets to curb escalating crime, warning that Delhi has become even more lawless than regions historically associated with high crime.
