Mumbai, September 2026 : BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia on Friday expressed confidence that the Asia Cup trophies won by the Indian men's and women's cricket teams will eventually find a place at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) headquarters at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Saikia was speaking to reporters after the conclusion of the 95th BCCI Annual General Meeting at the board's headquarters. His comments came after the Indian women's team declined to receive their winner's medals and trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Mohsin Naqvi following their Asia Cup triumph in Dubai last week.
Naqvi is also the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Pakistan's interior minister. The Indian men's team had adopted a similar position after winning the Asia Cup last year.
"We congratulated our women's team for their superb victory in Dubai last week. They have very nicely won the first match against Japan and we hope that they will win the gold medal in the Asian Games on 22nd of this month," Saikia said.
Speaking about the Asia Cup trophies, he said the BCCI expected them to eventually reach its headquarters, although he did not specify a timeline.
"I will not give you a timeline, but I can assure you that both the trophies will come up and land up in this BCCI head office at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai," Saikia said.
The BCCI secretary also provided details about the board's upcoming plans, including the Indian Premier League (IPL). The player auction for the next IPL season is scheduled for the second week of December and will be the final mini-auction of the current 2023-27 media rights cycle.
The board is also planning major celebrations to mark 20 years of the IPL. Saikia said the BCCI had discussed plans to involve state cricket associations in supporting physically challenged cricketers and promoting greater opportunities for them.
Looking further ahead, the BCCI is preparing for its centenary celebrations. The board will complete 100 years in December 2027, and Saikia said the centenary programme would begin in December 2027 and continue for a year.
The BCCI secretary also clarified the appointment of former Assam Ranji Trophy cricketer Subhadeep Ghosh as the fielding coach of the Indian men's senior team following the departure of T Dilip.
Ghosh, who previously worked with the senior women's team between 2021 and 2023, is also a fielding coach at the BCCI Centre of Excellence. He took charge of the men's team ahead of India's two-Test tour of Sri Lanka in August.
Saikia said Ghosh's current appointment was for a short period and that his performance would be assessed before any decision on a longer tenure.
"Indian men's team fielding coach (Subhadeep Ghosh) has been appointed for a short time but we will be assessing his performance (for a longer stint)," he said.
Ghosh's continuation will be reviewed after India's upcoming tour of New Zealand, taking into account performance assessments and feedback from the wider team management. Subject to the review, he could remain in the position through the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.
