“Mpox Spreads Globally: Limited Impact in India, Say Experts”

The Mpox virus, also known as the monkeypox virus, has spread to 116 countries worldwide, prompting the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare it a global health emergency. The virus, first discovered in monkeys in 1958, causes rashes on the body of those infected. With its spread now a global concern, many are wondering about the situation in India. Currently, there is no significant outbreak of Mpox in the country.

In its latest update, WHO reported 27 cases of Mpox in India between January 2022 and June 2024, with one death recorded. Health experts suggest that India is not at high risk from this virus, as vaccines are available that can treat it. Furthermore, the virus can be controlled through strict monitoring and timely identification of infected individuals at international airports.

The WHO’s declaration of an emergency is due to the increasing number of Mpox cases in many countries. The organization has urged people to stay alert to prevent the situation from worsening. Mpox is a viral disease typically spread through close contact with an infected person. So far, this virus has caused flu-like symptoms and pus-filled rashes in those affected.

This is the second time in three years that WHO has declared an emergency for Mpox, with the previous instance occurring in 2022. During that time, the virus spread to over 100 countries, resulting in more than 200 deaths. Mpox has primarily affected gay and bisexual men, though recent reports indicate a growing number of cases among young girls, especially in Congo, where over 14,000 cases and more than 500 deaths have been reported.

Dr. Ishwar Gilada, a health expert, warns that Mpox can cause fever, rashes, swollen lymph nodes, and other symptoms. While the virus can spread through droplets, the risk is relatively low. He emphasizes that India’s strong vaccine production capabilities should be leveraged to manage and contain the virus effectively. Mpox symptoms usually last 2-4 weeks, and while most people recover fully, some can develop severe illness.
