Sports Minister Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar Inaugurates Tuichangral Games 2026 at Khawhai

Khawzawl, April 2026: At 7:30 PM, Sports & Youth Services Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar attended and inaugurated the opening ceremony of the Tuichangral Games 2026 at Khawhai Town Hall. The event, organized by the Tuichangral Games & Sports Association (TGSA), will be held from April 13 to 22, 2026. MLA of Hrangturzo constituency and Adviser to the Chief Minister Lalmuanpuia Punte was the chief guest, while TGSA Senior Vice President Lalrengpuia Kawlni presided over the function.

The minister expressed his appreciation for the Games, noting that it is organized collectively by sports associations and the community. He stated that one of his first priorities after assuming office was to promote events like the Tuichangral and Tuipuiral Games. He urged the people of Tuichangral to continue supporting the Games and emphasized the importance of organizing Olympic-discipline competitions, especially for younger participants.

Highlighting the government’s vision, the minister said that preparations are being made with a focus on the 2036 Olympics. Despite India’s visibility in certain sports, he noted that the country still ranks lower in major international competitions, and improving athletes’ performance is a top priority. He stressed the need for quality coaching from the grassroots level and better development of athletes alongside infrastructure.

Through the “Empowering Mizoram Sports (EMS)” initiative, the government is actively supporting athletes. The minister informed that coaching programs are already underway for children aged 8 to 15 in eight Olympic disciplines: Archery, Badminton, Boxing, Hockey, Judo, Taekwondo, Weightlifting, and Wrestling. These training sessions span 15 days (45 hours). Coaches can apply through the EMS website, and local communities will support their travel and accommodation, fostering a sense of shared responsibility.

He also mentioned that the government is focusing on high-quality coaching, with Mizo coaches having already received training from experts at Nippon Sports Science University, Tokyo, in collaboration with JICA India in December 2025. Villages under the Tuichangral region were encouraged to apply for EMS coaching programs.

From 2025 onward, Olympic-discipline competitions for younger athletes have been introduced in both Tuichangral and Tuipuiral Games. This year, competitions for under-16 participants in Boxing, Weightlifting, and Wrestling will be आयोजित with support from the Mizoram State Sports Council and sports associations. Financial assistance of ₹1 lakh is provided to each sports association and ₹50,000 to the Tuichangral GSA, which will be increased to ₹1 lakh from next year. Additional support for EMS disciplines will also continue. The minister also announced an allocation of ₹15 lakh for the development of the Khawhai sports field.

Chief guest Lalmuanpuia Punte appreciated the progress made by Tuichangral in sports. He emphasized that sports should promote unity and development rather than rivalry and conflict, and encouraged the identification and nurturing of talented athletes.

The event also featured speeches from representatives of Women & Child Development, MBOCWW, and LESDE, and was attended by government officials and a large number of local residents.

The Tuichangral Games 2026 marks its 15th edition. The event traces its origins back to 1970 as the “Tuipui Tuichangral Mini Olympic,” which was discontinued due to financial constraints, revived in 1982, paused again, and restarted in 2005 with support from sponsors. In 2014, it briefly merged with Tuipuiral Games.

This year’s competitions include Football and Volleyball (both men and women), along with Boxing, Wrestling, and Weightlifting for under-16 participants. The primary objective is to prepare young athletes to represent India at the 2036 Olympics by nurturing talent from an early age under the guidance of the Chief Minister and the Sports Minister.
