Maharashtra Leads in Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development

The era of global warming has shifted to an era of rapid climate warming, calling for immediate and decisive action, as highlighted by the United Nations. Recognizing the urgent need for action, India, particularly the state of Maharashtra, has responded swiftly. This proactive approach has helped the state avoid some of the extreme conditions seen in Europe and America during the past summer.

Maharashtra’s progress in poverty reduction is notable, but the key factor contributing to the state’s resilience is the immediate steps taken by the government to address the looming threat of climate change. These efforts have helped mitigate the rise in temperature and reduced the occurrences of unseasonal and excessive rainfall. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, the state government has implemented crucial environmental policies to align with the changing climate. To ensure these decisions are effectively carried out, the ‘Chief Minister’s Environment and Sustainable Development Action Committee’ has been established, with State Agricultural Value Commission Chairman Pasha Patel serving as the executive chairman.

Second International Agriculture Award Announced for Chief Minister Eknath Shinde

The Maharashtra government’s work in environmental protection and sustainable development has gained international recognition. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde will be honored with the second World Agriculture Award, announced by the International Council of Agriculture, for his leadership in implementing these significant environmental initiatives. The award will be presented at a ceremony on the 18th of this month at NCPA in Mumbai, attended by Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, along with representatives from 20 countries. This award is a tribute to the people of Maharashtra and a matter of pride for the entire state.

Carbon emissions are the primary cause of climate change. To combat this, the Indian central government has mandated the use of 5% biofuel in thermal power plants as an alternative to coal. Supporting this effort, the Maharashtra government has launched a bamboo cultivation program across the state. Bamboo, known for its ability to absorb high amounts of carbon and produce 200 times more oxygen, is a key crop in maintaining environmental balance. Recognizing its potential, the government has planned bamboo plantations across 1.146 million hectares, offering a subsidy of ₹7 lakh per hectare under the Mission Bamboo Plantation initiative. This is being implemented through the Forest Department, Employment Guarantee Scheme, and Local Self-Government.

In 2021, the central government reclassified bamboo as a grass, removing restrictions on cutting bamboo in forest areas, which has opened up opportunities for economic income from bamboo cultivation. Given its high carbon absorption and oxygen production, bamboo plays an essential role in balancing nature’s cycles. Under the guidance of Chief Minister Shinde, bamboo cultivation has become a central focus in the state’s climate strategy. As a result, Maharashtra managed to keep summer temperatures below 50°C, except in a few areas.

In addition to bamboo cultivation, the Maharashtra government has taken several eco-friendly measures, such as promoting green hydrogen, green ammonia, solar and wind energy, investing ₹75 crore in these renewable sources, conserving 75 lakes as ‘Amrit Sarovars,’ and building a floating solar energy project at the Nathsagar reservoir in Jayakwadi.

Bamboo also thrives with minimal water, offering an additional benefit to farmers. Alongside its environmental advantages, the Employment Guarantee Scheme is providing farmers with sustainable livelihoods through bamboo cultivation.
