70th National Film Awards Presented by President Draupadi Murmu Mithun Chakraborty Honored with ‘Dadasaheb Phalke Award’
New Delhi : Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty was honored with the ‘Dadasaheb Phalke Lifetime Achievement Award’ by President Draupadi Murmu at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony.
The awards distribution ceremony took place at Vigyan Bhawan, with Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister of State Dr. L. Murugan, Secretary of Information and Broadcasting Sanjay Jaju, Supervisory Committee Chairman, and other dignitaries present. The awards presented were for films made in the year 2022.
Marathi films like Murmurs of the Jungle and Warasa were honored in various categories. A total of 38 awards were announced in the feature film category, including accolades for films in different languages. In the non-feature film category, 18 awards were presented across various categories.
Dadasaheb Phalke Lifetime Achievement Award to Mithun Chakraborty
Mithun Chakraborty has played iconic roles in many popular films such as Suraksha, Mrigaya, Disco Dancer, and Agneepath. His debut film Mrigaya (1976) earned him his first National Award, while Disco Dancer (1982) made him famous across India. He was honored with the ‘Dadasaheb Phalke Award’ for his long-standing contribution to Indian cinema.
Murmurs of the Jungle Awarded Best Documentary
The award for Best Documentary in the non-feature film category was given to the short film Murmurs of the Jungle. The film’s director, Sohail Vaidya, accepted the award. Murmurs of the Jungle highlights the challenges of conserving India’s natural heritage, particularly its forests and wildlife. It emphasizes the importance of forest conservation and wildlife protection, drawing attention to the human impact on these ecosystems.
The film depicts the life of various wildlife species, plants, and communities in India’s forests, aiming to raise awareness about the need for conservation.
Best Biographical Historical Reconstruction Film Award for Ankhi Ek Mohenjo Daro
The award for Best Biographical Historical Reconstruction Film in the non-feature film category went to Ankhi Ek Mohenjo Daro. The film’s director, Ashok Rane, accepted the award. The documentary portrays the vibrant culture that flourished around Mumbai’s textile mills, known as Girangaon, in the mid-19th century. The film captures the rise and fall of this industrial community, which played a crucial role in political and social movements, but faced decline in the 1980s.
Best Art-Culture Film Award for Warasa (Legacy)
The documentary Warasa (Legacy) won the award for Best Art-Culture Film in the non-feature film category. Directed by Sachin Suryavanshi, the film also won a Filmfare Award for Best Non-Fiction Film. It explores the martial arts traditions of the Shiva period, a heritage preserved by the people of Kolhapur. The documentary showcases how locals are keeping these war systems alive.
Sumant Shinde Awarded for Best Narration and Voice
Sumant Shinde received the award for Best Narration and Voice in the non-feature film category for the documentary Murmurs of the Jungle.
Other Highlights
Suraj Barjatya won Best Director for Unchai. KGF: Chapter 2 was awarded Best Kannada Film and Best Stunt Choreography. Kaberi Antardhaan won Best Bengali Film, and musician Pritam received the Best Music Score award for the Hindi film Brahmastra. Naushad Sadar Khan won Best Lyricist for Aparajito, while Best Actor awards went to Rishabh Shetty for Kantara and Nithya Menon for Thiruchithrambalam. Mansi Parikh won Best Actress for Kutch Express. The award for Best Marathi Film was announced for Walvi.
