10 Political Leaders Join Congress in Manipur Amidst Growing Discontent
In Manipur, a significant political shift occurred as ten political leaders from various parties formally joined the Indian National Congress. The event took place in the state capital, Imphal, on Friday. Among the new members are two senior leaders from the National People’s Party, including L Jayantakumar, a former state health and family welfare minister, and Oinam Romen Singh, who recently contested the state assembly elections. Alongside them, eight other politicians from diverse political backgrounds also joined the Congress.
The event, held at Congress Bhawan, saw the presence of key figures such as Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee President Keisham Meghachandra Singh, former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, Central Working Committee member Gaikhangam, and All India Congress Committee Secretary for Manipur, Christopher Tilak. They collectively welcomed the new members, emphasizing the party’s growing strength.
The leaders cited dissatisfaction with the current state and central government’s handling of the ongoing conflict in Manipur, which has persisted for over 17 months, as a primary reason for their shift to the Congress. Their move reflects a desire for change and a growing belief that the Congress can better address the issues plaguing the state.
This development marks a notable boost for the Congress party in the region, as it continues to attract discontented leaders from other political factions, further solidifying its presence in Manipur’s political landscape.
