Chhattisgarh Takes Significant Initiative Towards Achieving Clean Environment and Net Zero Emissions: Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai

Chhattisgarh has taken a significant step towards achieving a clean environment and net zero emissions, said Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai today at his Residence Office during the signing of a historic tripartite MoU between Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority, GAIL India Limited, Bharat Petroleum, and six municipal corporations of the state for the production of compressed biogas from urban solid waste. Chief Minister Shri Sai extended his best wishes to all the institutions involved in this special MoU and remarked that this initiative would give Chhattisgarh a new identity in the areas of cleanliness, energy production, and sustainable development.

Chief Minister mentioned that today marks the addition of another crucial link in Chhattisgarh’s development. Under the sustainable planning initiative in Chhattisgarh, rapid progress is being made towards the production of compressed biogas from urban solid waste. He recalled that Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi initiated the Swachh Bharat Mission, which raised widespread awareness among citizens about cleanliness in their surroundings. He further noted that significant progress has been made in cleanliness across the state, and the establishment of these plants in urban bodies will fulfill the commitment to make cities clean and beautiful. The production of biogas as biofuel will not only meet the state’s energy needs but also realize the concept of waste-to-energy. He urged all institutions involved in the MoU to complete the establishment of the plants within the stipulated timeframe.

Chief Minister Shri Sai emphasized that this MoU will fulfill the major objectives of environmental protection and cleanliness while also generating employment. The task will be completed with the cooperation of esteemed institutions of the Government of India, leveraging their expertise in this sector.

Deputy Chief Minister Shri Arun Sao highlighted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, significant decisions have been made in the direction of environmental protection, cleanliness, and waste-to-wealth. Continuous campaigns are being conducted for cleanliness in the state, making it a crucial topic for urban areas today. The aim is to make cities clean, beautiful, and well-equipped, and this MoU with prestigious institutions of the Government of India will ensure the completion of this work with quality.

On the occasion of MoU signing today, Chief Minister’s Principal Secretary Shri Subodh Singh, Chief Minister’s Secretary Shri P. Dayanand, Chief Minister’s Secretary Dr. Basavaraju S., and officials from GAIL India, BPCL, Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority, and six urban bodies were also present.

It is noteworthy that under the Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) initiative, there are vast opportunities for the production of biofuel, such as compressed biogas (CBG), from urban solid waste in Chhattisgarh. Following continuous efforts by the Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority (CBDA), a tripartite MoU was signed today with GAIL and BPCL for establishing compressed biogas plants in municipal corporations of Ambikapur, Raigarh, Korba, Bilaspur, Rajnandgaon, and Dhamtari.

Key Features of the Project

Through this MoU, approximately 350 metric tons of urban solid waste per day and around 500 metric tons of surplus biomass will be utilized for biofuel production across six municipal corporations. The six plants will produce approximately 70 metric tons of compressed biogas daily. The total investment in these projects, amounting to about Rs 600 crore, will be fully undertaken by GAIL and BPCL. Additionally, the state is expected to earn about Rs 6 crore in GST annually from the production and sale from these plants.

Chhattisgarh Moves Towards Cleanliness, Environmental Protection, Organic Farming, and Net Zero Emissions

As a result of the MoU, the by-products from the established plants will promote organic farming. Effective waste disposal will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, propelling Chhattisgarh towards achieving net zero emissions
