Maharashtra Government’s Clarification on Media Monitoring Government Resolution
Addressing Concerns Raised by Mumbai Press Club
Mumbai – The Maharashtra government today provided a detailed clarification regarding the recently issued Government Resolution (GR) on media monitoring, addressing the concerns raised by the Mumbai Press Club. It was emphasized that the initiative is not intended to surveil the media or suppress criticism, but rather to analyze and take necessary action against misinformation.
Fact-Checking, Not Surveillance
The initiative will solely focus on fact-checking published information. Journalists and media organizations will not be monitored, and the mechanism will be used to counter misinformation in the public interest.
Objective Analysis
The term ‘negative reporting’ in this context refers only to false, misleading, or deliberately distorted information. Fact-based constructive criticism will never be classified as negative. The classification system follows clear guidelines, ensuring that objective reporting and constructive criticism continue to reach the government as before.
Government’s Role
- Ensuring accurate information reaches the public
- Establishing a mechanism to counter misinformation in a timely manner
- Operating within constitutional limits
Transparency and Communication
- Full transparency in operations, aligned with central government procedures
- Public availability of findings
- Willingness to engage positively with media organizations
The primary goal of this initiative is to ensure that citizens receive accurate information. The government reaffirmed its commitment to press freedom and democratic values, stating that the system is designed to prevent misinformation from distorting public perception.
The Maharashtra government also expressed its readiness to collaborate with media organizations and incorporate qualitative improvements in the initiative. This mechanism will ultimately help citizens access accurate information on government schemes and programs, according to the Directorate General of Information and Public Relations (DGIPR).
