Yogi govt’s ‘Swachh Garima’ campaign to uphold the dignity of daughters
Lucknow : Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s government is working on a new initiative focused on the health, self-respect, and dignified living of girls. Under this initiative, adolescent girls studying in all Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) across Uttar Pradesh will receive scientific and practical training on menstrual hygiene, nutrition, and their right to communication.
The Basic Education Department has launched this initiative, called the ‘Swachh Garima’ campaign, in a phased manner across 746 KGBVs. The aim is to eliminate the stigma around natural biological processes and empower girls to live with self-respect and confidence.
Basic education minister Sandeep Singh stated that the Yogi government is fully committed to the future, safety, health, and education of daughters. “Our goal is not just to help them achieve their dreams but also to dispel myths and social taboos related to health. Through this confluence of dialogue and sensitivity, the girls of our state will not only remain healthy but will also move towards their dreams with pride and dignity,” he added.
’Sankoch Nahi Samvad Zaruri’— An initiative to change social mindsets
This initiative is a step towards realizing Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s vision of a positive social transformation. He often emphasizes that women’s empowerment cannot be achieved solely through laws but requires a change in societal attitudes and behaviors. That’s why the government is integrating sensitive issues into education, giving a new direction to life skill-based learning.
Under this campaign, girls will be taught that menstruation is not a matter of shame or embarrassment, but a natural bodily function that should be understood and managed hygienically. This learning will take place through illustrations, dialogues, and interactive activities.
Supported by UNICEF, teachers to play a key role
A special module has been developed in collaboration with UNICEF to provide this training. It uses simple language and visual materials to educate students. Not only the girls, but also female teachers—and eventually even parents—will participate in this initiative. Teachers are being trained to discuss these topics with students openly and without hesitation.
A holistic approach: Health, Education, and Self-Empowerment
The ‘Swachh Garima’ campaign is part of the Yogi government’s broader policy aimed at equipping girls not just with academic knowledge, but also with practical life skills and moral strength. This is a powerful extension of the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign, and a decisive step towards making young girls healthy, aware, and confident.
