AI171 Crash: Helplines Set Up as India Mobilizes Relief After Ahmedabad-London Flight Disaster

Ahmedabad : In the aftermath of the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI171 from Ahmedabad to London, emergency response teams are working round the clock to aid victims and manage the situation. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, carrying 242 people—including 230 passengers and 12 crew members—crashed shortly after takeoff, triggering panic across the city.

Air India has issued a dedicated helpline number—1800 5691 444—for families and relatives seeking updates on passengers. In addition, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has activated a control room to coordinate all response efforts. The ministry shared the contact numbers 011-24610843 and 9650391859 on social media platform X, assuring the public of a swift and coordinated response.

“The Operational Control Room is actively coordinating all details related to AI171. We are fully committed to supporting all affected,” stated the ministry.

According to official reports, the ill-fated flight took off from Runway 23 at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 13:38 IST. Onboard were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian. The aircraft issued a Mayday distress call moments after departure, but no further communication was received.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) confirmed that the aircraft crashed just outside the airport perimeter, suggesting it was unable to gain sufficient altitude.

Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekaran, expressing deep sorrow, assured the public that every possible step is being taken to support victims and their families. “Our immediate priority is to assist emergency responders and provide full care to those affected,” he said in a statement.

Rescue operations are ongoing, with the injured being transported to nearby hospitals. Authorities are urging the public to avoid the area and rely on official sources for information.

This marks one of the most serious aviation tragedies in recent years, and the nation watches with hope as relief efforts continue.
