Ancient step-well of Alirajpur gets a new lease of life.

‘Jal Ganga Samvardhan’ campaign is being run in the state. In the campaign, ancient step-wells (bawdis) and water structures are being renovated. The ancient step-well built at Dev Sthan in Jobat in Alirajpur district was cleaned and renovated.

The work of removing silt, soil and garbage from the step-well was being done for a long time with the collective efforts of the district administration, social organisations and common citizens. The peepal plants growing in the ancient step-well were safely removed and planted at another place. The step-well, about 60 feet deep, belongs to the year 1906. According to the inscription found, the step-well was constructed by the then Nagar Kotwal. 10 trolleys of silt and garbage have been removed during the cleaning of the step-well.

The step-well has been restored. A parapet has been built for safety. Along with this, a hand pump has also been installed. Now devotees are getting clean water from hand pumps in the temple premises. The steps of the step-well have been made more secure by installing nets.

Under the guidance of Commissioner of Indore Division Shri Deepak Singh, the work is being done to renovate ancient step-wells and water structures in all the districts of the division. Alirajpur Collector Dr. Abhay Arvind Bedekar said that there are many ancient step-wells in Alirajpur, they have been identified and efforts have begun with the formulation of an action plan for their restoration.
