Unique Water Conservation Initiative Under ‘Mor Gaon Mor Pani’ Campaign
Construction of 125 Structures in Sarguja’s Gram Panchayats Marks a Major Step Towards Groundwater Recharge
Raipur : A unique and large-scale water conservation initiative is being carried out under the Mor Gaon Mor Pani (My Village, My Water) campaign in Sarguja district. With the objective of improving groundwater levels and ensuring sustainable water management, 125 water conservation structures are being constructed across various gram panchayats under the guidance of Collector Mr. Vilas Bhoskar and District CEO Mr. Vinay Kumar Agrawal. The works are being implemented rapidly under the MGNREGA scheme.
The five gram panchayats of Janpad Panchayat Udaipur—Palka, Phulchuhi, Rikhi, Lallati, and Kesma—have become the focal points of this campaign. A total of 125 structures are being built on the slopes of surrounding hills, including staggered trenches, contour trenches, water absorption trenches, loose boulder check dams, gully plugs, and dabris (small water ponds). These structures aim to capture rainwater flowing through streams during the monsoon and allow it to percolate into the soil, thereby enhancing the groundwater table.
Scientific Planning Through GIS Technology
To ensure effective implementation, Geographic Information System (GIS) technology is being used for scientific planning and design. Using the “ridge to valley” approach, structures are strategically planned from hilltops to valleys so that rainwater can be systematically collected and stored for maximum recharge.
Addressing Soil Erosion
Previously, rainwater runoff caused severe soil erosion in these areas. The construction of these water structures will not only support water conservation but also provide a permanent solution to the problem of soil erosion. By slowing the water flow in the streams, these structures will allow gradual absorption into the ground, thereby enriching groundwater reserves.
Enthusiastic Response from Villagers, Gratitude to Administration
The campaign has generated significant enthusiasm among the local villagers. Local representatives and residents have praised the administration’s initiative, calling it a historic step toward solving the village’s chronic water issues. Villagers are hopeful that these efforts will bring positive changes in irrigation, drinking water availability, and environmental protection in the coming years.
Administrative Priority: Water Conservation and Environmental Protection
Under the leadership of Collector Mr. Vilas Bhoskar, the district administration is making every possible effort toward water conservation. All departments have been directed to work in coordination and ensure quality implementation so the campaign becomes a milestone in resolving the district’s water crisis. District CEO Mr. Vinay Kumar Agrawal is leading the construction of water structures with community participation, aiming to raise awareness about water conservation and encourage citizens to take ownership of this vital resource.
