Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi Begins Two-Day Visit to India Amid Border Talks and Global Tensions
New Delhi, Aug 2025 : Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will arrive in New Delhi on Monday for a two-day visit that is being closely watched in both diplomatic and strategic circles. His visit comes at a time when India-China relations remain fragile following the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes, while India’s trade relations with the United States face turbulence due to Washington’s tariff hikes.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Wang Yi will land in the capital around 4:15 p.m. on Monday. His first official engagement will be a bilateral meeting with External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar at 6 p.m., where the two leaders are expected to discuss a broad range of issues, from the boundary situation to trade cooperation and regional security challenges.
Focus on Border Dialogue
The centerpiece of Wang Yi’s visit will be the Special Representatives (SR) dialogue on the boundary question, scheduled for Tuesday morning with National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval. Both Wang and Doval serve as their countries’ designated special representatives for the talks, which are aimed at finding mechanisms for peace and tranquillity along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
Although both sides have disengaged troops at several friction points, the broader de-escalation process remains incomplete. Currently, an estimated 50,000 to 60,000 troops from each side remain deployed along the LAC in eastern Ladakh, reflecting the unresolved nature of the standoff that began in May 2020.
The talks are expected to explore new confidence-building measures to reduce tensions and prevent further clashes. This dialogue gains additional importance as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to travel to China later this month to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin.
Diplomatic Significance
Wang Yi’s visit is widely seen as part of an effort by both nations to repair ties severely strained since the Galwan Valley clashes. His meetings in Delhi follow a series of steps taken by New Delhi and Beijing to revive dialogue channels. Notably, NSA Doval had traveled to China in December last year to hold similar discussions, shortly after Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to resume various dialogue mechanisms at a meeting in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024.
In addition to border issues, the two sides are also discussing ways to resume direct flight services—suspended since 2020 due to the pandemic and subsequently frozen because of the border row. Other initiatives, such as the revival of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and the re-issuance of Indian tourist visas to Chinese nationals, have already been launched as confidence-building steps.
Geopolitical Context
The visit comes at a time when India’s relations with the United States have entered a difficult phase. Last week, President Donald Trump announced a decision to double tariffs on Indian goods to 50 percent, with an additional 25 percent penalty imposed on imports linked to Indian purchases of Russian oil. The move has introduced fresh uncertainty in India’s external trade and could push New Delhi to recalibrate its strategic partnerships.
Against this backdrop, Wang Yi’s discussions with Indian leaders will not only focus on bilateral ties but also on broader regional and global dynamics, including trade resilience, connectivity, and cooperation within multilateral frameworks such as the SCO.
High-Level Engagements
On Tuesday evening, the Chinese Foreign Minister will call on Prime Minister Modi at his official residence, 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, at 5:30 p.m. This meeting, taking place just days before Modi’s scheduled trip to China, is expected to set the tone for his engagements with President Xi at the SCO summit.
The visit follows a series of high-level exchanges between the two sides in recent months. Both Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and EAM Jaishankar have traveled to China recently for SCO-related meetings, signaling that despite differences, dialogue remains active.
Looking Ahead
While the scars of the 2020 clashes are far from healed, Wang Yi’s visit underlines a shared recognition in both New Delhi and Beijing that managing the boundary dispute and stabilizing ties is critical. With trade, connectivity, and security all at stake, the outcome of these meetings will be closely watched not just in the region but also in capitals across the world.
