Honoring Athletes on the Occasion of National Sports Day

Mumbai, Aug 2025 : Mumbai suburban district has produced athletes who have performed at the international level. To ensure that many more such athletes emerge in the future, all necessary facilities will be made available, assured Minister of Information Technology, Cultural Affairs, and Guardian Minister of Mumbai Suburban District, Adv. Ashish Shelar. On this occasion, he also announced that a modern sports complex will be established in the district.

Minister Shelar was speaking while presiding over a special program organized on National Sports Day at the North Indian Association Hall, Bandra (East), on the birth anniversary of Padma Bhushan Major Dhyan Chand Singh. The event was organized by the District Sports Officer’s Office, Mumbai Suburban, under the Department of Sports and Youth Welfare.

Present on the occasion were Mumbai Suburban District Collector Saurabh Katiyar, District Sports Officer Rashmi Ambedkar, international weightlifting player N. Swami Rangaswami (Summer Olympic participant), and Dronacharya Award-winning international footballer Vipul Ghosh.

In the program, 11 male and female athletes from Mumbai Suburban who had excelled at the national and international levels, as well as recipients of the Chhatrapati State Sports Awards, were felicitated. In addition, traditional Dahi Handi troupes, which preserve the cultural legacy of this sport, received special honors. Among those felicitated were Parle Sports Women’s Govinda Pathak (world record with seven tiers), Konkan Nagar Govinda Pathak, and Jai Jawan Govinda Pathak (world record with ten tiers), who were felicitated by the Guardian Minister and other dignitaries.

The event also featured demonstrations of yoga and Dahi Handi performances. District Collector Katiyar highlighted the various sports initiatives in the district and encouraged students to pursue excellence not only in academics but also in sports. He assured that every effort would be made by the government to provide encouragement and support to athletes so they can earn recognition at the district, state, and international levels.
