Gaikwad Confirms New Opening Pair as CSK Look for Strong IPL 2026 Start
Mumbai, March 2026: Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has indicated a fresh approach at the top of the order for the upcoming Indian Premier League 2026 season, confirming that he will open the innings alongside wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson.
Speaking during the IPL 2026 captains’ meet, Gaikwad revealed that he will return to his preferred opening slot, forming a new and experienced opening combination with Samson. The move comes as CSK aim to address the instability that plagued their top order in the previous season.
The five-time champions endured a disappointing IPL campaign last year, with their batting lineup struggling to find consistency. Gaikwad himself batted at No. 3 for a significant part of the season, while the team experimented with multiple opening options, including Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway and Rahul Tripathi. However, none of the combinations delivered sustained success.
A late-season shift saw youngsters Ayush Mhatre and Dewald Brevis step in as replacements, providing aggressive starts during the powerplay. Mhatre impressed with 240 runs in seven innings at an average of 34.28 and a striking rate close to 189, including a notable 94 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Brevis also contributed significantly, scoring 225 runs in six innings at a strike rate of 180.
Ahead of IPL 2026, CSK made a bold move in the transfer market by acquiring Samson from Rajasthan Royals, trading out key players Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran. The inclusion of Samson is expected to bring both stability and firepower at the top.
CSK will kick off their IPL 2026 campaign against Rajasthan Royals at Barsapara Cricket Stadium on March 30. Their first home fixture is scheduled for April 3 against Punjab Kings, followed by another home game against Delhi Capitals on April 11 at the iconic M. A. Chidambaram Stadium.
With a revamped opening pair and renewed focus, CSK will be hoping for a stronger and more consistent start to their IPL 2026 campaign.
