Yogi govt transforms the Gorakhpur division into a medical education hub with AIIMS and five MBBS colleges
Gorakhpur : In the past seven years, the Yogi government has transformed the Gorakhpur division from having just one medical college into a medical education hub. This year, 300 new MBBS seats will be available, bringing the total to 675 seats in the division. Thanks to the government’s efforts, MBBS seats have increased nearly sevenfold in seven years.
Seven years ago, Gorakhpur and eastern Uttar Pradesh faced significant challenges, particularly in medicine and medical education. The sole beacon of hope for treatment and medical studies in the region, including nearby divisions, Bihar and Nepal, was BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur. However, due to mismanagement, even BRD Medical College struggled, often facing the risk of losing its MBBS accreditation. In just seven years, the Yogi government has transformed the Gorakhpur division into a role model for medical education and healthcare.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, known for his dedication to health services and medical education since his parliamentary tenure, has transformed the medical infrastructure and education landscape across Uttar Pradesh.
The changes in the Gorakhpur division, in particular, are remarkable. Once home to just one medical college, the division boasts five medical colleges across four districts and a world-class AIIMS.
Previously, BRD Medical College offered 100 MBBS seats. This number increased by 125 seats with the opening of AIIMS Gorakhpur and by 100 seats with the establishment of Maharishi Devraha Baba State Autonomous Medical College in Deoria.
Starting this year, 300 new MBBS seats will be available across three new medical colleges in the division. The state autonomous medical college in Kushinagar has 100 seats, KMC Medical College in Maharajganj has 150 seats under a PPP model, and Shri Gorakhnath Medical College Hospital and Research Center, affiliated with Mahayogi Gorakhnath University, has 50 seats approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC). Mahayogi Gorakhnath University is already recognized for 100 BAMS seats in Ayurveda.
Additionally, the construction of Uttar Pradesh’s first AYUSH University in Gorakhpur is expected to be completed by the end of this year, further expanding education and treatment in Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Unani, and other traditional medical systems.
