Exploring Hyperpigmentation
Written by Shalini Vohra
Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition characterized by the darkening of certain areas of the skin, making them appear darker than the surrounding area. This occurs due to the excess production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. While hyperpigmentation can be harmless it can be a cause of cosmetic concern for many individuals.
Hyperpigmentation can be triggered by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun stimulating melanin production especially to the exposed areas of the skin. Inflammation of the skin such as skin injuries ,acne or eczema ,can cause post-inflammatory hyper pigmentation(PIH). As the skin heals, it may produce excess melanin, leaving dark spots in the affected areas.
Hormonal fluctuations , particularly during pregnancy or while taking birth control pills , can lead to a type of hyperpigmentation known as melasma. This causes dark patches usually on the face , and is more common in woman.
Some individuals are more prone to hyperpigmentation due to their genetic makeup. Those with darker skin are at a higher risk , as they naturally produce more melanin.
Certain medications , including chemotherapy drugs can cause hyperpigmentation as a side effect.
For treating hyperpigmentation , the use of sunscreen is very important and the dermatologist may recommend skin bleaching creams or depigmenting creams. Many such creams have hydroquinone, these should be strictly used under the instructions of a dermatologist as overuse of hydroquinone and steroid creams can cause damage to the skin.
Skin treatments like laser therapy , chemical peels and microdermabrasion can be tried in addition to medications.
Dr Sirisha Singh , a renowned dermatologist in Delhi advises “Preventing pigmentation by using sunscreen regularly and eating brightly colored fruits and vegetables is more cost effective than treating pigmentation.”
With a wide range of treatment options available from topical creams to advanced laser therapies to achieve a more even skin tone the best method of combating and preventing hyperpigmentation is through the diligent use of sunscreen and consulting a dermatologist for personalized advice is the best approach.
