Uttarakhand makes Gita recitation compulsory in schools; CM Dhami highlights cultural heritage and unity
Dehradun, Dec 2025 : Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Sunday announced that the state government has made the recitation of verses from the Bhagavad Gita mandatory across all schools in Uttarakhand. He said the initiative aims to strengthen the connection of students with India’s cultural roots, moral values, and philosophical teachings, ultimately contributing to their holistic development.
Sharing the update on the social media platform X, Chief Minister Dhami wrote, “Our government has made the recitation of verses from the Gita compulsory in schools across the state. This initiative is paving the way for the all-round development of students by connecting them with Indian culture, moral values, and philosophy of life.”
The announcement reflects the government’s growing focus on promoting value-based education rooted in Indian traditions. The Bhagavad Gita, widely regarded as a spiritual and philosophical guide, is believed to offer children essential lessons in character-building, emotional balance, and leadership.
Alongside this educational move, Chief Minister Dhami also used social media on Sunday to highlight Uttarakhand’s distinctive cultural identity. In a video post, he spoke about the historic Katarmal Sun Temple located in the Almora district.
Dedicated to Lord Surya (the Sun God), the Katarmal temple is a remarkable example of Katyuri-era craftsmanship and devotion. Dhami described the temple as a symbol of the state’s “glorious history and vibrant cultural tradition,” encouraging tourists to explore the ancient site. He wrote, “The historic Katarmal Sun Temple, located in Almora district, is a living example of the exquisite architecture and intense devotion of the Katyuri period. This ancient heritage dedicated to Lord Surya reflects Uttarakhand’s rich cultural tradition and glorious history. During your winter trip, be sure to visit this sacred site.”
Earlier, speaking at the seven-day Mahakouthig cultural festival organised by the Parvatiya Cultural Society at the Noida Stadium in Gautam Buddha Nagar, Dhami stressed the importance of cultural preservation. He stated that events like Mahakouthig play a significant role in safeguarding Uttarakhand’s folk traditions and in bringing together people from the state as well as those living outside Uttarakhand.
Expressing admiration for the diaspora community, Dhami said it was a matter of pride that people living away from the hill state continued to protect and promote its traditional art forms, dialects, and customs. He referred to them as “true brand ambassadors” of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand.
The Chief Minister described Mahakouthig as more than a cultural celebration, calling it a “vibrant platform that brings to life the soul of Uttarakhand.” He noted that such programmes help pass on cultural values, artistic heritage, and community traditions to future generations.
Dhami also reaffirmed the government’s dedication to preserving the cultural and social fabric of the state. He said the administration had enacted stringent laws to prevent religious conversion, divisive ideologies, and illegal land encroachment, asserting that these measures are being implemented firmly to protect Uttarakhand’s identity and unity.
