NZ Defeat West Indies by 323 Runs, Climb to WTC No. 2

New Delhi, Dec 2025 : New Zealand soared to second place on the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) table after crushing the West Indies by a staggering 323 runs in the third and final Test at Mount Maunganui. The emphatic victory not only sealed a 2-0 series win for the Black Caps but also propelled them above South Africa in the standings, leaving only Australia ahead as the competition intensifies.

With this triumph, New Zealand now shift focus to their next WTC challenge – a three-match series against England scheduled for the middle of next year. The tour promises high stakes as they look to sustain momentum and strengthen their bid for a place in the final.

For the West Indies, the outcome was another disappointing chapter in their Test journey. Now placed ninth in the WTC table, they will regroup at home next year to face Sri Lanka and Pakistan, hoping to revive their standing in the ongoing championship cycle.

The series decider at Bay Oval showcased New Zealand’s clinical excellence. The result was sealed midway through the final session when left-arm seamer Jacob Duffy claimed the last wicket, triggering celebrations around the ground. His performance capped an exceptional series, earning him the Player of the Series award and widespread acclaim.

Duffy was particularly lethal in the West Indies’ second innings, where they were bowled out for just 138 while chasing a daunting target of 462. The left-armer returned with superb figures of 5/42, marking his third five-wicket haul of the series. His consistency and aggression proved pivotal across both matches, and he finished with a remarkable tally of 23 wickets.

In doing so, Duffy broke one of New Zealand cricket’s most treasured records. His relentless wicket-taking spree pushed his annual tally beyond Richard Hadlee’s long-standing mark of 80 wickets in a calendar year. Surpassing the legendary all-rounder’s milestone firmly established Duffy as one of the brightest bowling talents in world cricket today.

Reflecting on the achievement, Duffy said he was humbled by the company he now keeps in New Zealand’s cricketing history. “I saw that list at lunch time, and there were some cool names on there, so to be up there on any sort of list with those sort of names was special,” he said.

While the bowlers dominated with ball in hand, New Zealand’s batting foundation was equally monumental. Openers Devon Conway and Tom Latham etched their names into Test cricket history by becoming the first opening pair to score two centuries each in the same match. Their commanding displays set the tone for New Zealand’s overwhelming dominance.

Conway’s effort stood out as a defining highlight. With scores of 227 and 100, he became the first New Zealander – and only the 10th player ever – to register both a double century and a century in the same Test. His extraordinary feat earned him the Player of the Match award and drew admiration from teammates, fans, and cricketing observers worldwide.

Conway admitted the magnitude of his achievement would take time to fully absorb. “I don’t think it’s sunk in yet. It will take some time for me to get my head around what happened in this Test match. But I’m really glad we got the win,” he said.

With a historic series win, a record-breaking performance from Duffy, and an unforgettable batting display from Conway and Latham, New Zealand’s Test campaign has begun on the strongest possible note. Their sights are now set firmly on England – and on sustaining their march toward the WTC final.
