Minister Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar Reviews Law Enforcement Activities with Champhai Officials
Champhai, January 2026: Excise & Narcotics Minister Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar on Tuesday held a review meeting with government and district officials at the DC Conference Hall, Keifangtlang, Champhai. The meeting was organized under the supervision of Champhai Bawrhsap Pu Mohammad Aaquib.
During the session, Champhai SP Pu Lokeshwaran R presented a detailed report on the police department’s law enforcement activities, while Excise & Narcotics Assistant Commissioner Pu C. Thangchuanga highlighted the department’s operations. Representatives from Assam Rifles, the Social Welfare Department, and the Young Mizo Association (YMA) also shared their respective contributions.
Minister Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar appreciated the efforts of the law enforcement agencies in Champhai and emphasized the importance of continuing effective monitoring and enforcement. He noted that being a border district, Champhai is particularly vulnerable to illegal activities, and stressed the need for strict enforcement to prevent Mizo citizens from engaging in unlawful acts.
He also called for awareness campaigns in the community, including schools, youth organizations, local churches, and government institutions, to educate the public about drug abuse and promote social responsibility. The minister commended the cooperation between government officials and community leaders in ensuring law enforcement efforts are effective in the district.
According to Champhai Police records for 2025, a total of 149 cases were registered under the NDPS Act involving 260 individuals. Confiscated items included 38.477 kg of heroin, 622.4 kg of methamphetamine, 5.169 kg of crystal meth, 3,000 kg of caffeine, 4.470 kg of alprazolam, and 1.6 grams of corex.
The large-scale anti-drug initiative, Operation Jericho, was carried out in multiple phases last year. In Phase I alone, 52 individuals were arrested, 17 motorcycles were seized, along with 9.235 kg of heroin, 74.852 kg of methamphetamine, and 565 litres of BEDC. Phase II of the operation is scheduled from January to March this year.
In 2025, the Excise & Narcotics Department in Champhai also registered 183 cases under the MLP Act and 132 cases under the NDPS Act, recovering 14.577 kg of heroin, 125.065 kg of methamphetamine, 2,733.1 litres of BEDC, and 884.8 litres of country liquor. Additionally, 15 drug awareness campaigns were conducted throughout the year to educate the public.
The review emphasized the need for continued vigilance, coordination among enforcement agencies, and community participation to combat illegal substances effectively in Champhai district.
