New Delhi, Sept 2026 : India’s campaign for a strong medal haul at the Asian Games 2026 will gather further momentum on Sunday, with several athletes and teams set to compete in crucial medal events and opening-round matches as the continental showpiece gets underway officially.
Although the Indian contingent has already been in action since Thursday, Saturday marks the formal opening of the Games. Teqball has emerged as one of India’s early medal opportunities, with Quimcy Joaquim Dsouza and Mohamed Anas Imran Beg set to compete in medal matches on Sunday.
Quimcy and Anas will face Vietnam’s Hoang Minh Tan Nguyen and Gia Nghi Trinh in the mixed doubles bronze-medal match. The Indian pair had earlier suffered a defeat against the Vietnamese combination in the quarter-finals.
Quimcy will have another opportunity to win a medal when she takes on Japan’s Yuina Sakamoto in the women’s singles bronze-medal match.
The Indian women’s cricket team will also be in action in the semifinal against Bangladesh. The team will look to progress towards defending the gold medal it won at the 2023 Asian Games.
Shooting will provide another important medal opportunity for India, with Elavenil Valarivan, Sonam Uttam Maskar and Vidarsa K Vinod competing in the women’s 10m air rifle events.
India’s hockey campaign will also begin on Sunday. The Indian women’s team will face Uzbekistan in their opening Pool B match, while the men’s team will begin its Pool A campaign against Indonesia.
