Russia Warns of Consequences if Poland Intercepts Its Missiles

Russia has issued a stern warning regarding the potential consequences if Poland attempts to intercept Russian missiles over Ukrainian territory. Oleg Tiapkin, the director for Europe at the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated that any such action by Poland would provoke an “appropriate” response. Tiapkin emphasized that Russia has consistently cautioned NATO countries against direct involvement in the conflict on Ukraine’s side.

Tiapkin further noted that both Warsaw and NATO are well aware of Russia’s stance on this matter. The diplomat’s comments come in response to recent remarks by Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, who indicated that Poland is considering the possibility of shooting down Russian missiles over Ukraine, a move reportedly requested by Kiev from NATO.

Earlier in June, French media reported that Ukraine had been urging its European allies to establish a no-fly zone over western Ukraine. This proposal included deploying anti-aircraft systems in Poland and Romania, both NATO members, as part of efforts to bolster air defense in the region.

Since February 24, 2022, Russia has been conducting a special military operation in Ukraine, which, according to President Vladimir Putin, aims to protect the Ukrainian population from what he describes as genocide by the current Kiev authorities. Additionally, the operation seeks to address national security concerns related to NATO’s expansion eastward.
