Steps from Paddy to Maize: Crop Diversification Boosts Farmers’ Income and Promotes Water Conservation in Dhamtari
Raipur, March 2026 : Once known for its traditional paddy cultivation, Dhamtari district is now emerging as a new model of agricultural innovation. Farmers here are rapidly shifting toward crop diversification, adopting crops that require less water but offer higher returns. This transition has not only transformed farming practices but also brought a positive change in farmers’ mindset and resource utilization.
Under a visionary initiative by the district administration, crop diversification has been turned into a mass movement. Continuous efforts to raise awareness, provide training, and offer regular guidance have played a key role in its success. Teams from the Agriculture Department have reached out to villages, engaging directly with farmers and building their confidence in adopting new crops.
Farmer Ramprakash Netam from Gattasilli Talpara village stands as an inspiring example of this transformation. Earlier dependent solely on paddy cultivation, he now grows maize on 3.5 acres, achieving better yields and higher income. With guidance from agricultural experts, he has adopted improved techniques, pest management practices, and better crop care methods, making his farming more profitable.
Like Ramprakash, hundreds of farmers have embraced maize and other alternative crops, significantly improving their economic condition. Fields swaying with maize crops vividly reflect this positive change. This shift has not only increased farmers’ income but also reduced the risks associated with traditional farming.
Crop diversification has also had a positive environmental impact. The adoption of less water-intensive crops has reduced pressure on irrigation systems, aiding water conservation and helping maintain groundwater levels. Additionally, cultivating diverse crops has improved soil fertility.
This initiative goes beyond merely increasing production; it is a strong step toward ensuring sustainable and stable income for farmers. Dhamtari’s crop diversification model is now emerging as a successful government-led example, poised to inspire agricultural innovation and sustainable development across the state in the coming years.
