Jharkhand Farmers Shift to Coarse Grains Amid Two-Year Drought

Farmers in Jharkhand have been suffering from a drought for two consecutive years due to lack of rain, resulting in wasted harvests and a food crisis. In response, farmers are demanding compensation from the government for their lost crops. The government is now promoting the sowing of coarse grains, which require less water for irrigation, as a viable alternative.

The yield of paddy and maize in Jharkhand has been low due to irregular rainfall and weather fluctuations. Coarse grains, which are more resilient to these conditions, are seen as a better option. To improve yields, varieties of various crops that perform well with less water are being developed.

Given the decline in crop production, farmers are being encouraged to cultivate pulses and coarse grains. These crops can produce good yields with minimal water and are rich in nutrients. To boost their consumption, various dishes made from coarse grains are being promoted, increasing their demand and benefiting farmers directly. Recognizing the advantages, the Jharkhand government has launched the Jharkhand Millet Mission Scheme for 2024-25.

Under this scheme, farmers will receive incentives from the state government to cultivate coarse grains like Madua (Ragi), Bajra, Sawa, and Millet. The incentives range from Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 15,000, depending on the area of cultivation, from a minimum of 10 decimil to 5 acres. These funds will be directly transferred to the farmers’ accounts based on their eligibility.

The Mota Anaj Yojana allows both raiyats and sharecroppers to benefit from this scheme. For example, a farmer cultivating coarse grains on 5 acres will receive Rs. 15,000. Additionally, clusters of five to ten hectares will be developed in each block as demonstration plots. Support will also be provided to SHGs, FPOs, Cooperative Societies, and KVKs for establishing Millet Seed Banks. There is also a provision for cash prizes for the best farmers in coarse grain production and the Millet Seed Bank.
