Historic Groundwater Conservation Drive Under ‘Mor Gaon Mor Pani’ Mega Campaign

Massive Public Participation Drives Water Harvesting and Recharge in 439 Gram Panchayats of Surguja District

Raipur : A landmark campaign for groundwater conservation was successfully conducted under the ‘Mor Gaon Mor Pani’ (My Village, My Water) mega initiative across 439 gram panchayats in Surguja district on 25 June. The initiative aimed to enhance groundwater levels and maximize the harvesting of rainwater through a coordinated and participatory public effort.

Rainwater Harvesting in PMAY Homes

As part of the campaign, rainwater harvesting systems were installed in the homes of 1,085 beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin). These systems are expected to facilitate water collection and recharge, leading to a rise in groundwater levels in rural areas.

Soak Pit Construction for Groundwater Recharge

To ensure the absorption of rainwater into the soil, 355 soak pits were constructed during the campaign. Notably, soak pits were installed in the homes of 723 women belonging to self-help groups (SHGs), reflecting a strong community-driven approach to sustainable water management.

Water Conservation in Government Buildings

Water conservation efforts were also extended to government buildings across the district. Rainwater harvesting systems were installed in 216 gram panchayat offices and 124 other government facilities such as schools, health centres, and Anganwadi centres. Additionally, existing rainwater systems in 12 panchayat offices and 55 other government buildings were repaired and made functional again.

‘One Tree in Mother’s Name 2.0’ Campaign Boosts Green Cover

Alongside the water conservation efforts, the ‘One Tree in Mother’s Name 2.0’ afforestation drive was also carried out through public participation. Under this initiative, 12,475 saplings have been planted at PMAY homes, panchayat offices, and village households, encouraging ecological balance and green development.

The success of this campaign is a result of the active involvement of citizens, Panchayati Raj institutions, self-help groups, village-level workers, and the general public. It stands not only as a milestone in the path of water conservation but also as a symbol of growing awareness and responsibility towards sustainable natural resource management in rural communities.
