World sees a surge in Noncriminal Arrests After Trump’s Demands.
Early last month, the White House delivered a diktat to Homeland Security demanding that the rate of migrant arrests be tripled, to 3,000 people a day. The pressure appeared to work, with ICE sweeping up 2,200 migrants in 24 hours, just days later. However, new data obtained by the UC Berkeley School of Law’s Deportation Data Project shows that 47 percent of people arrested by the agency in June had no criminal charges or convictions. This contradicts Donald Trump’s campaign promise to “use ICE to deport criminal aliens immediately and aggressively”.
While the point about aggression might stand, the administration appears to be cracking down on non-criminals. The 47% figure is up from just 21% in early May, before White House aide Stephen Miller demanded officers make 3,000 arrests per day or be fired. Even ICE’s own data from June shows that 42% of its average 930 daily arrests involved people with no charges or convictions against them. “The media continues to peddle this FALSE narrative that ICE is not targeting criminal illegal aliens”, (DOHS) Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement.
Acting in line of the diktat, ICE had sent out mass texts to thousands of people enrolled in the “Alternatives to Detention” program, telling them to come to a pre-arranged meeting only to arrest them when they arrived. “If you enter, there’s a possibility that they’ll take you into custody”, Veronica Navarrete, an asylum-seeker from Ecuador, told the Press. “And if you don’t enter, you’ve missed your appointment, and that’s automatic deportation. We have no way out”.
An ICE spokesperson claimed those arrested had “executable final orders” issued by a judge, but multiple immigration lawyers claimed no such orders had been issued. “ICE arresting people already on Alternatives to Detention is bureaucratic theater”, said Jason Houser, former ICE chief of staff during the Biden administration. “These individuals are vetted, complying, and are in custody supervision and often have legal status”.
While, ramming cars, sledgehammering windows and raiding churches in pursuit of migrants appears to be the new norm for Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Trump’s America.
However, President Donald Trump was found defending the ICE move; Trump appeared to acknowledge the concern in a post on Truth Social on Thursday. “Our great Farmers and people in the Hotel and Leisure business have been stating that our very aggressive policy on immigration is taking very good, long time workers away from them, with those jobs being almost impossible to replace”, he said, before blaming the Biden administration. “In many cases the Criminals allowed into our Country by the VERY Stupid Biden Open Borders Policy are applying for those jobs. This is not good. We must protect our Farmers, but get the CRIMINALS OUT OF THE USA. Changes are coming!”
