Trump Administration Revokes Over 100,000 Visas in Record Enforcement Drive
Washington, Jan 2026 : The Trump administration has revoked more than 100,000 visas issued to foreign nationals in less than a year, marking a record level of enforcement as part of its broader effort to tighten border controls and strengthen public safety, according to the US State Department.
Confirming the move, State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott said the scale of visa revocations represents a sharp escalation compared to previous years and reflects the administration’s intensified focus on national security and law enforcement.
“The Trump administration has no higher priority than protecting American citizens and upholding American sovereignty,” Pigott said, underscoring that visa enforcement has become a central pillar of the government’s immigration strategy.
He noted that the pace of cancellations has increased dramatically. “In less than one year, the State Department revoked over 100,000 visas from foreign nationals, marking a new record and more than a 150 per cent increase in revocations since 2024,” Pigott stated.
According to the State Department, the visa revocations targeted foreign nationals accused or convicted of a wide range of criminal offenses. These included serious and repeat violations such as assault, theft, and driving under the influence (DUI), among other public safety-related crimes.
“The State Department revoked visas from thousands of foreign nationals charged or convicted with crimes, including assault, theft, and driving under the influence,” Pigott said, adding that individuals who pose a risk to public safety would not be allowed to retain legal entry privileges.
Officials attributed the sharp rise in visa cancellations to enhanced screening, monitoring, and enforcement mechanisms introduced under President Donald Trump. A key component of this strategy is the recently launched Continuous Vetting Center, which is designed to monitor visa holders even after they have entered the United States.
“The State Department’s Continuous Vetting Center works to ensure that all foreign nationals on American soil comply with our laws — and that the visas of those who pose a threat to American citizens are swiftly revoked,” Pigott said.
Unlike traditional vetting systems that focus primarily on background checks during the visa application or entry process, the Continuous Vetting Center tracks visa holders throughout their stay in the US. Officials say this approach enables authorities to act quickly if a visa holder is later charged with or convicted of a crime, reducing delays in enforcement.
Pigott emphasised that the policy aligns with the administration’s broader national security framework. “The Trump administration will continue to put America first and protect our nation from foreign nationals who pose a risk to public safety or national security,” he said.
However, the State Department did not provide a detailed breakdown of the revoked visas by country or visa category. It also did not specify how many of the affected individuals were tourists, students, temporary workers, or long-term residents.
The move comes amid an intensified national debate in the United States over immigration enforcement, border security, and the balance between safeguarding national interests and maintaining legal immigration pathways. Visa policy has emerged as a major focal point of the administration’s domestic and foreign policy agenda, particularly as concerns over crime, border management, and national security continue to dominate political discourse.
Under US law, visa revocation authority allows the government to cancel visas issued to foreign nationals if they are deemed ineligible or if they pose security, criminal, or public safety concerns. The administration has signalled that this authority will continue to be used aggressively as part of its enforcement-driven immigration approach.
