DM&R Issues Directive for Mock Earthquake Exercise on January 15

Aizawl, Jan 2026: Mizoram, along with India, is located in Seismic Zone 5, which makes it highly prone to earthquakes. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has recently proposed an updated Seismic Zonation recommending even stricter safety measures, and discussions are underway to introduce Zone 6 for India’s most earthquake-prone regions. Over the years, several areas in Mizoram have experienced minor tremors, and in 2020, a significant earthquake was recorded in the state. In light of these risks, the government has emphasized the need for public awareness and preparedness, especially for children and communities in vulnerable areas.

To enhance preparedness, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), in coordination with the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) and District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMA), has scheduled a State-Level Mock Exercise on Earthquake Disaster on January 15, 2026, to be conducted across all districts in Mizoram. The exercise aims to train communities in response protocols, evaluate department readiness, and build capacity to handle emergencies effectively.

In preparation for the mock exercise, Brig. Ravinder Gurung (Retd.), Senior Consultant (ME & IRS) from NDMA, visited Mizoram on January 6, 2026. Following this, a Coordination and Orientation Meeting was held with the Disaster Management Department and relevant district authorities. On January 13, 2026, a Table Top Exercise took place at the Conference Hall, Assembly House Annexe, with participation from multiple districts through video conferencing, ensuring thorough preparation for the state-wide drill.

During the January 15 exercise, alarms (sirens) will be triggered across Mizoram to simulate an earthquake scenario. Various departments, local authorities, and volunteers will participate in the exercise, including state and district-level police and paramilitary forces. Special support from the State Disaster Response Force of Assam and Tripura will be deployed in the Kolasib and Mamit districts.

The exercise will also be monitored by National Observers, as well as state and district-level observers to assess performance and coordination. Video live streaming from the State Emergency Operation Centre, Aizawl, and respective District Emergency Operation Centres will allow real-time observation and evaluation. A debriefing session will follow to analyze outcomes and identify areas for improvement.

This mock drill, while not a prediction of an actual earthquake, is designed as a realistic scenario to train communities, test response protocols, and strengthen disaster preparedness across Mizoram. Officials emphasize that such exercises are critical to ensuring public awareness, readiness, and effective management of potential earthquake disasters.
