District Council & Minority Affairs Minister Inaugurates 24 Basketball Courts and 18 Volleyball Courts in Lunglei, Lawngtlai, and Mamit Districts under PMJVK
Aizawl, Jan 2026: Pu C. Lalsawivunga, Minister of District Council & Minority Affairs, inaugurated 24 basketball courts and 18 volleyball courts across Lunglei, Lawngtlai, and Mamit districts under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK). The event was held at the Mizoram Secretariat Conference Hall, MINECO, organized by the Mizoram State Sports Council (MSSC). These new sports facilities cover 42 locations across Mizoram, providing local communities with access to modern infrastructure for training and recreation.
Minister Lalsawivunga emphasized that the PMJVK initiative under MSSC aims to develop sports infrastructure in minority-concentrated areas while promoting youth participation in sports. He highlighted that these facilities will encourage training, healthy lifestyles, and sports culture, helping Mizoram prepare its athletes for events like the 2036 Olympics.
He added that the PMJVK, a Central Government scheme, ensures infrastructure development along with benefits for health, education, and community empowerment. The minister also noted that the new sports facilities provide opportunities for local youth, foster discipline, and enhance employment generation.
The MSSC and PMJVK (PMU) oversaw the project execution. Pu Henry C. Lalrawnkima, Secretary of MSSC, stated that the councils prioritized timely and quality construction to ensure maximum benefits for the community. Pu James Lalramnghaka, Assistant Engineer, MSSC, presented the technical report.
The project was approved under the PMJVK scheme of the Ministry of Minority Affairs for 2020-2021, including basketball courts with viewing galleries and volleyball courts with viewing galleries. The expenditure sanction was granted on March 22, 2022, and the tender was awarded to M/s Junior Consultancy Services, Tlangnuam, Aizawl.

Lunglei District:
- Basketball Courts with Viewing Gallery: 2 courts; total cost Rs. 107.11 lakh (90% Central share: Rs. 96.40 lakh, 10% State share: Rs. 10.71 lakh)
- Locations: Buarpui, Lunglawn
- Volleyball Courts with Viewing Gallery: 2 courts; total cost Rs. 32.58 lakh (Central: Rs. 29.32 lakh, State: Rs. 3.26 lakh)
- Locations: College Veng, Theiriat
Lawngtlai District:
- Basketball Courts with Viewing Gallery: 5 courts; total cost Rs. 108.07 lakh (Central: Rs. 97.26 lakh, State: Rs. 10.81 lakh)
- Locations: Chawngte P, Chawnhu, Diltang, Paithar, Mampui
- Volleyball Courts with Viewing Gallery: 4 courts; total cost Rs. 32.87 lakh (Central: Rs. 29.58 lakh, State: Rs. 3.29 lakh)
- Locations: Chawnhu, Diltlang, Paithar, Chawngte C
Mamit District:
- Basketball Courts with Viewing Gallery: 17 courts; total cost Rs. 102.59 lakh (Central: Rs. 92.33 lakh, State: Rs. 10.26 lakh)
- Locations include: Zamuang, Bungthuam, Lallen, New West Phaileng, Phuldungsel, Saithah, West Phaileng, Borai, Kanhmun, Kawrtethawveng, DSC Mamit, Rengdil, Zawinuam College, Zomuantlang, Zampui Phuldungsei, Mamit, Darlak
- Volleyball Courts with Viewing Gallery: 12 courts; total cost Rs. 31.20 lakh (Central: Rs. 28.08 lakh, State: Rs. 3.12 lakh)
- Locations include: Marpara North, Saikhawthlir, Chhippui, Parvatui, Phuldungsei, Saithah, Pukzing, West Phaileng, Borai, Rengdil, Zomuantlang, Zampui Phuldungsei
Specifications:
- Basketball Courts: 32×19 meters, RCC flooring, pavilion, changing rooms, lighting, angle iron and goat-proof nets
- Volleyball Courts: 26×15 meters, RCC flooring, gallery, security fencing, urinal shed, lighting
The total project cost for 24 basketball courts is Rs. 2,272.32 lakh (@ Rs. 94.68 lakh per court) and for 18 volleyball courts is Rs. 519.66 lakh (@ Rs. 28.87 lakh per court).
These courts are expected to promote sports culture, youth development, and community engagement in minority-populated districts of Mizoram.
