Ranching Showcased as Flagship Initiative at Ganga Innovation Meet 2026

Barrackpore, West Bengal; January 2026: The Ganga Innovation Meet 2026, organised by the ICAR–Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI) under the Namami Gange Programme, emerged as a major platform for promoting science-led solutions for the rejuvenation of the River Ganga.

Held from January 13 to 15 at Barrackpore, the national-level meet centred on the theme, Biodiversity Conservation, Stock Enhancement & Small-scale Fisheries in the Ganga River Basin”.

A key highlight of the Three Days Meet was fish ranching, presented as the flagship initiative demonstrating innovation, collective action and long-term ecological commitment to the river basin. Ranching, which is defined as the systematic release of healthy fish seed into natural river systems, was showcased as a proven method for rebuilding depleted fish stocks and restoring ecological balance. ICAR-CIFRI has so far ranched approximately 203.41 lakh fingerlings of Indian Major Carps (Rohu, Catla and Mrigal) across different river systems in the country as part of ongoing stock enhancement and conservation programmes.

During these 03 days event, large-scale ranching operations were conducted at Du Paisa Ghat, Barrackpore.

  • On the first day (13th January) 70,000 fingerlings of Indian Major Carps were released,
  • On the second day (14th January) additional 72,000 fingerlings of IMC and Bata were released.
  • On the final day (15th January) another 70,000 fingerlings of IMC, Bata and Pabda were ranched into the Ganga.

Scientists highlighted that these releases form part of a wider strategy to strengthen native and migratory fish populations while maintaining the river’s natural productivity and ecological resilience.

The meet have demonstrated how ranching integrates advanced hatchery technologies, ecological assessment and post-release monitoring to ensure scientific rigour. Equally significant was the strong emphasis on community participation. Fishers from different stretches of the Ganga actively engaged in discussions and capacity-building sessions, reinforcing their role as custodians of the river. The initiative aims to improve fish availability, stabilize catches and enhance income opportunities for small-scale fishing communities, while fostering stewardship of aquatic biodiversity.

By positioning ranching as its flagship event, ICAR-CIFRI reaffirmed its commitment to evidence-based fisheries management and river conservation. The Ganga Innovation Meet 2026 concluded with a clear message that sustainable rejuvenation of the Ganga lies at the intersection of science, community engagement and shared responsibility for future generations.

Team Maverick.
