Towards Self-Reliance Through Fish Farming Using Biofloc Technology

Raipur, January 2026 : By linking fisheries with modern technology, the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana is emerging as a strong livelihood option for rural youth in Chhattisgarh. Shri Sanjay Suman, a resident of village Badmar under Kartala development block in Korba district, has adopted biofloc technology to establish fish farming as a profitable enterprise. Despite limited resources, he achieved higher production and earned a net profit of Rs 3.20 lakh in a year.

Shri Sanjay Suman constructed a biofloc pond on his 25 dismil private land. Under this technology, a special liner is laid in the pond and water is filled in a controlled environment, where fast-growing improved fish species are reared. The biggest advantage of biofloc technology is that it enables higher production using less water and less land. Farmers can harvest twice a year, significantly increasing their income.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, Shri Sanjay Suman received a government subsidy of Rs 8.40 lakh. With this support, he started fish farming based on modern technology. Last year, he produced about 6 metric tonnes of fish from the biofloc pond. Through sales, he earned a total income of Rs 7.20 lakh. After deducting production costs, his net profit stood at Rs 3.20 lakh.

Encouraged by his success, Shri Suman is now working on plans to increase production capacity and double his income this year. He believes that with government schemes and technical guidance, fisheries along with traditional agriculture can become a sustainable and profitable business. His success has become an inspiration for other farmers and youth in the region.
