PM Modi to Attend 3rd India-Nordic Summit in Oslo, Focus on Technology, Green Energy and Strategic Cooperation

Oslo, May 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the 3rd India-Nordic Summit in Oslo on Tuesday, with discussions expected to focus on strengthening India’s strategic engagement with Nordic nations in areas such as technology, renewable energy, sustainability, defence, innovation, trade and the Arctic region.

The summit is being seen as an important step in deepening India’s partnership with the Nordic countries at a time when global cooperation on green transition, advanced technologies and economic resilience is gaining increasing importance.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Prime Minister Modi will join Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre along with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, Icelandic Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson for the high-level summit in Oslo.

The MEA stated that the summit would build upon the momentum generated during the previous India-Nordic Summits held in Stockholm in 2018 and Copenhagen in 2022.

“The Summit will impart a more strategic dimension to India’s relationship with the Nordic countries, especially in technology and innovation; green transition and renewable energy; sustainability; blue economy; defence; space and the Arctic,” the MEA said.

The Nordic nations are globally recognised for leadership in innovation, clean energy, sustainable urban development and digital governance, areas where India has been seeking deeper partnerships as part of its long-term economic and strategic objectives.

Ahead of the summit, Prime Minister Modi on Monday attended the India-Norway Business and Research Summit in Oslo, where he highlighted the growing momentum in economic cooperation between India and Norway following the implementation of the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement.

The event brought together more than 250 participants from Indian and Norwegian business and research sectors, including CEOs of over 50 companies. Several agreements between Indian and Norwegian firms were signed during the summit, reflecting growing commercial and investment ties between the two countries.

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Norway on Monday as part of the fourth leg of his ongoing five-nation tour. In a special gesture, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre personally received him at the airport. Senior officials, including Norway’s Ambassador to India May-Elin Stener and India’s Ambassador to Norway Gloria Gangte, were also present to welcome the Prime Minister.

During the visit, PM Modi also met King Harald V at the Royal Palace in Oslo. Discussions during the meeting focused on expanding cooperation between Indian and Norwegian companies, particularly in emerging technologies and innovation-driven sectors.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), PM Modi appreciated Norway’s natural beauty and underlined that the friendship between India and Norway continues to deepen on the basis of shared democratic values, rule of law and people-centric governance.

King Harald later hosted a luncheon in honour of the Indian Prime Minister, who expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality extended during the visit.

A major highlight of the visit was PM Modi being conferred with the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit, Norway’s highest civilian honour for foreign Heads of Government.

“Honoured to receive the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit. This honour is dedicated to the people of India and is a tribute to the enduring friendship between India and Norway. It reflects our shared commitment to global progress,” PM Modi said after receiving the award.

According to the PMO, the honour is awarded in recognition of outstanding service in the interest of Norway and humanity.

The summit is expected to further strengthen India’s engagement with the Nordic region, which has emerged as an important partner in areas such as green technology, maritime cooperation, clean energy, innovation ecosystems and sustainable economic growth.
