NASA Moves Artemis II Rocket to Launch Pad Ahead of Crewed Lunar Mission
Florida, March 2026 : NASA has successfully rolled out its powerful Space Launch System (SLS) rocket along with the Orion spacecraft to the launch pad at Kennedy Space Center, marking a significant step toward the upcoming Artemis II crewed mission to the Moon.
The fully integrated rocket and spacecraft began their journey from the Vehicle Assembly Building shortly after midnight and covered approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) over 11 hours before reaching the launch pad. This rollout signals the start of final launch preparations, with the launch window currently scheduled to open on April 1 and extend through April 6.
The move follows extensive repairs and system checks carried out after a wet dress rehearsal conducted on February 21 revealed a technical issue involving helium flow to the rocket’s upper stage. Engineers brought the system back to the assembly building, where they addressed the issue and carried out a series of upgrades and tests to ensure mission readiness.
During this period, teams replaced and recharged critical batteries across multiple components, including the core stage, upper stage, and solid rocket boosters. They also activated new flight termination system batteries and ensured the Orion spacecraft’s launch abort system was fully powered. Additional work included replacing a seal on the liquid oxygen feed line and reassembling key structural components to guarantee a secure and reliable configuration.
The Artemis II mission will mark NASA’s first crewed journey around the Moon in decades. The mission is expected to send four astronauts on a 10-day trip, orbiting the Moon before returning safely to Earth.
The crew includes NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with Jeremy Hansen from the Canadian Space Agency.
Looking ahead, Artemis II will pave the way for Artemis III, which aims to land astronauts on the lunar surface using advanced technologies and commercial lunar landers developed by private partners. As final preparations continue, the Artemis programme represents a major step forward in humanity’s return to deep space exploration.
