US Airstrike on Iranian Bridge Escalates Tensions, Trump Warns of More Action

Washington, April 2026 : The United States has carried out a targeted airstrike on a key highway bridge in Iran, sharply escalating tensions in the region, as Donald Trump warned that further action could follow and urged Tehran to return to negotiations.

According to US officials, the strike hit the B1 bridge connecting Tehran with the nearby city of Karaj. A US military official described the target as a strategic link intended to serve as a supply route for Iran’s missile and drone operations. The attack, officials said, was part of a broader campaign to disrupt Iran’s military logistics and restrict the movement of key components used in its weapons programmes.

However, Iranian authorities disputed the military significance of the bridge. State media reported that the structure was not yet operational and was not being used for military purposes. Officials also confirmed casualties, stating that at least eight people were killed and several dozen others injured in the strike, including civilians who were outdoors during the Nowruz celebrations.

Trump praised the strike in a social media post, calling it a decisive blow. “The biggest bridge in Iran comes tumbling down, never to be used again — much more to follow!” he said. He also issued a direct warning to Iran, urging its leadership to “make a deal before it is too late,” signalling continued pressure from Washington.

Iran’s leadership responded with defiance. Mohammad Ghalibaf declared that the country would stand united in defending its sovereignty. “When it comes to defending our homeland, each and every one of us will become a soldier,” he said, adding that the nation was “armed, ready and standing.”

Tehran has ruled out immediate diplomatic engagement with the United States. A spokesperson from Iran’s foreign ministry stated that negotiations were “impossible under current conditions,” reflecting the deepening rift between the two sides.

The bridge strike was accompanied by other reported attacks on infrastructure. Iranian authorities claimed that an airstrike also struck the Pasteur Institute of Iran, a prominent public health facility. A health ministry official condemned the incident as a “direct assault on international health security.”

Meanwhile, the conflict appears to be widening across the region. Israel reported intercepting missiles launched from Iran, while Houthi forces in Yemen also fired a missile toward Israeli territory, further raising concerns about a broader regional confrontation.

Efforts to de-escalate the crisis at the international level have so far stalled. At the United Nations Security Council, attempts to authorise coordinated action to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz were blocked by Russia, China and France.

With tensions rising and diplomacy at a standstill, the situation remains volatile, with fears of further escalation in the coming days.
