Maharashtra GST Revenue Rises by 12.6%; Contributes Two-Thirds to State’s Tax Income
Mumbai, April 2026 : The Maharashtra GST Department has recorded a strong revenue performance during the financial year 2025–26, with total collections from Goods and Services Tax (GST), Value Added Tax (VAT), and Professional Tax (PT) reaching ₹2,51,256 crore. This marks a 12.6 per cent increase compared to ₹2,23,087 crore collected in the previous financial year.
Maharashtra has retained its top position in GST revenue collection among all states in India. Notably, the state’s GST revenue is more than double that of the second-ranked state. The GST collection alone grew by 14.6 per cent compared to the financial year 2024–25, reaching ₹1,86,991 crore.
The robust growth in GST revenue reflects the strength of the state’s economy and is among the highest growth rates in the country, nearly double the national average. GST, VAT, and Professional Tax together contribute approximately 64 per cent to Maharashtra’s State Own Tax Revenue (SOTR), highlighting the critical role of the GST department in strengthening the state’s finances.
The department has exceeded its Budget Estimates (BE) for the fourth consecutive year, achieving 100.2 per cent of its target. Despite challenges arising from GST rate rationalisation, the department managed to sustain growth through consistent efforts and improved compliance, registering a solid 14.6 per cent increase.
Officials attributed this strong performance to increased domestic consumption following GST rate rationalisation, as well as continuous improvements in tax administration and enforcement.
The Maharashtra GST Department has implemented several reform measures, including data-driven feedback systems, advanced analytics-based enforcement, and enhanced monitoring of high-risk taxpayers. At the same time, it has maintained continuous engagement with honest taxpayers to improve compliance and trust.
Additionally, the department has focused on improving the business environment by promoting ‘Ease of Doing Business’ initiatives, aiming to simplify procedures and encourage economic activity.
These combined efforts have helped Maharashtra maintain its leadership position in tax collection while ensuring sustainable revenue growth and fiscal stability.
