In-Service Police Constables to Get Opportunity to Become PSI Through Departmental Exam
Mumbai, Sept 2025 : The post of Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) holds great importance and prestige within the state police force. Many young aspirants dream of becoming a PSI through the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) competitive exams. However, those unable to succeed in the direct recruitment exams often join the force as constables, aspiring to eventually rise to the PSI rank through departmental examinations.
The state government has now decided to restart the Limited Departmental Competitive Examination, providing serving police constables with a fresh opportunity to become PSIs.
Going forward, PSI vacancies will be filled 50% through direct recruitment, 25% through departmental exams, and 25% through promotions. This will ensure that the experience of in-service police constables is carried forward into the PSI role. Experience is crucial in handling law-and-order situations, and having seasoned constables step into PSI responsibilities—particularly at sensitive police stations—will strengthen peacekeeping efforts.
Currently, employees serving as Police Constables, Police Naiks, Head Constables, and Assistant Sub-Inspectors will be eligible to appear for this exam. The eligibility criteria are as follows:
- If the candidate has passed Class 10 or an equivalent exam recognized by the state government, they must have completed at least 6 years of continuous regular service by April 1 of the exam year.
- If the candidate has passed Class 12 or an equivalent exam, they must have completed at least 5 years of continuous service by April 1 of the exam year.
- If the candidate holds a degree or equivalent qualification, they must have completed at least 4 years of continuous service by April 1 of the exam year.
Additionally, the candidate’s age should not exceed 35 years as of April 1 of the exam year. For candidates from reserved categories, a 5-year age relaxation will apply. Importantly, while applying, the candidate must not be facing any departmental inquiry or criminal proceedings. The office where the employee is posted will have to issue a certification to this effect.
The Limited Departmental Competitive Exam will include both a written examination and a physical test, with marks determined by the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC). The merit list will be prepared based on the combined score of both tests.
This initiative ensures that serving constables now have a concrete pathway to becoming Police Sub-Inspectors (PSIs)—a move expected to boost both morale and efficiency within the force.
