Eastern Railways, Fairly Place, Kolkata
Vide a press release dated 26/12/2024, the Eastern Railways have brought it to the notice of the larger sections of the society, that:
Ensuring the safety and dignity of women is not just a responsibility but a mission. Recognising the need to create secure spaces for women in public transport, “Operation Mahila Suraksha” has been implemented with steadfast determination. This initiative, spearheaded by the Railway Protection Force (RPF), focuses on protecting women passengers and ensuring their right to travel without fear or intimidation.
In a world where women often face challenges while traveling, reserved coaches serve as a sanctuary.
However, the misuse of these spaces by unauthorised individuals threatens the safety and peace of women passengers. Addressing this concern, Operation Mahila Suraksha has been a relentless effort to identify and prosecute those who violate this sanctity.
Between 15th. and 20th. December, 2024, an intensive drive across Howrah, Sealdah, Malda, and Asansol divisions has led to the apprehension and prosecution of 304 individuals under the provisions of the Railways Act for unauthorised occupancy in women-only coaches. The numbers reflect the scale of action taken:
15th. December 2024: 18 offenders apprehended
16th. December 2024: 51 offenders apprehended
17th. December 2024: 80 offenders apprehended
18th. December 2024: 75 offenders apprehended
19th. December 2024: 51 offenders apprehended
20th. December 2024: 29 offenders apprehended
21st. December 2024: 74 offenders apprehended
The operation emphasies a zero-tolerance approach to any activity compromising women’s safety. RPF teams, including women officers, have been conducting surprise checks, ensuring vigilance, and acting swiftly to protect women travelers. Surveillance systems and strategic deployment of personnel have further strengthened the mission’s impact.
Operation Mahila Suraksha is not just about enforcement; it is about reclaiming safe spaces for women. It is a step towards ensuring that women can travel with confidence, knowing their security is being prioritised at every level. Passengers are encouraged to join this effort by reporting suspicious activities through the RPF Helpline 139 or contacting railway officials.
This mission is a pledge to every woman that her safety is of paramount importance. It is a promise to create a travel environment where she can feel protected, respected, and empowered. Together, we can ensure that no journey is overshadowed by fear, and every woman reaches her destination safely and with dignity in time.
