Wife Arrested in Honeymoon Murder Case of Indore Businessman in Meghalaya
Shillong : In a dramatic development, Meghalaya Police announced a major breakthrough in the murder case of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, who was found dead during a honeymoon trip to the state. His wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, was arrested in Uttar Pradesh and will soon be brought to Meghalaya for judicial proceedings and further interrogation.
Sonam was taken into custody early Monday morning after she surrendered at the Nandganj police station in Ghazipur district. According to police officials, she allegedly masterminded her husband’s murder by hiring contract killers during their honeymoon.
“She was traced under sustained investigative pressure and surrendered voluntarily,” said Meghalaya Police. Three of her alleged accomplices have also been arrested—two from Indore and one from Lalitpur—while a fourth suspect remains at large.
In an official statement, Meghalaya Police said, “We are pleased to announce a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the recent case involving the disappearance of a honeymooning couple from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, who went missing in East Khasi Hills district in May 2025.”
“Following sustained investigative efforts and multi-state coordination, three individuals have been apprehended. These arrests mark a decisive step in uncovering the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Shri Raja Raghuvanshi and the subsequent disappearance of his wife, Smt. Sonam Raghuvanshi,” the statement added.
Confirming Sonam’s surrender, the police noted that she is in the safe custody of Uttar Pradesh Police. “Necessary legal protocols are being followed for her transit to Meghalaya and to record her formal statement,” the police said.
Meghalaya Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dalton P. Marak told IANS that Sonam surrendered under pressure, increasing the total number of arrests in the case to four. “She will be brought to Meghalaya for court proceedings,” he confirmed.
Uttar Pradesh ADG (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash said Sonam was found at Kashi Dhaba on the Varanasi-Ghazipur main road. She was first taken to Sadar Hospital for a medical check-up and is now housed at the One Stop Centre in Ghazipur.
Meghalaya Police credited the success to its Special Investigation Team (SIT), backed by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local intelligence units, and cooperation from law enforcement agencies in other states.
“Despite geographical and logistical hurdles, and under intense public and media scrutiny, our teams remained focused and committed to justice,” the police stated.
Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) Idashisha Nongrang confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing and urged the public and media to avoid speculation and allow the legal process to unfold.
The case began when Raja and Sonam, who had come to Meghalaya for their honeymoon, went missing on May 23 while exploring tourist sites. After a ten-day search, Raja’s body was found at the base of a deep gorge near the Weisawdong Parking Lot at Riat Arliang. A machete, suspected to be the murder weapon, was recovered nearby. At that time, Sonam was also missing, prompting a massive search across multiple states.
The shocking twist in the case has drawn significant public attention and raised questions about premeditated crimes disguised as domestic travel incidents. With Sonam’s return to Meghalaya imminent, authorities hope to unravel the full sequence of events that led to this heinous crime.
Further details are expected to emerge as the legal proceedings progress in the coming days.
