Trump Says Iran Deal Deadline Final, Calls Proposal ‘Not Good Enough’
Washington, April 2026 : US President Donald Trump on Monday reiterated that the deadline he has set for Iran to reach a deal is final, stating that while Tehran’s latest proposal marks progress, it falls short of US expectations.
Speaking to reporters during an Easter event on the White House South Lawn, Trump said Iran had made a “significant proposal,” but stressed that it was “not good enough.” He warned that if Tehran fails to meet the Tuesday night deadline, US forces could launch extensive strikes targeting Iranian infrastructure.
“It could end very quickly, the war, if they do what they have to do,” Trump said, adding that Iran was aware of the specific conditions required to reach an agreement. He also noted that negotiations appeared to be conducted “in good faith” so far.
According to Trump, senior US officials have been engaged in indirect talks with Iran through intermediaries, including Pakistan. The discussions are focused on securing a commitment from Iran to abandon its nuclear weapons ambitions and to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route.
However, Iran has rejected the deadline, maintaining that it seeks a permanent end to the conflict rather than a temporary ceasefire arrangement.
Trump also suggested that the current Iranian negotiating team appeared less hardline compared to previous officials who were killed in recent airstrikes. “We think they’re actually smarter,” he remarked, hinting at a possible shift in Tehran’s approach.
In a controversial comment, Trump added that if it were solely his decision, the United States would consider taking control of Iran’s oil resources, though he acknowledged that such a move might not be supported by the American public.
The situation remains tense as the deadline approaches, with uncertainty over whether diplomacy or escalation will prevail.
