Atishi Appointed Delhi’s New Chief Minister Following Kejriwal’s Resignation

In a significant political development, Atishi has been appointed as the new Chief Minister of Delhi after Arvind Kejriwal announced his resignation. During a press conference, Atishi expressed her deep gratitude towards Kejriwal for entrusting her with such a crucial responsibility and vowed to work diligently to secure his re-election in the forthcoming elections.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for placing his trust in me by giving me this enormous responsibility,” Atishi stated. “Only in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) can a first-time politician rise to the position of Chief Minister.” She acknowledged the challenges facing the AAP, particularly the opposition from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and urged the people of Delhi to re-elect Kejriwal in the upcoming polls. “The people of Delhi, AAP MLAs, and I, who will serve as the interim Chief Minister until the next elections, are united in our resolve to bring Arvind Kejriwal back as the Chief Minister of Delhi,” she added.

Delhi Minister Gopal Rai echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the party’s push for early elections. He confirmed that Atishi would lead the government in the interim period. “When Arvind Kejriwal made the decision to resign, a legislative party meeting was convened. It was unanimously decided that Atishi would take on the role of Chief Minister until the next elections, which we hope will take place by October or November. We are confident that the people will return Kejriwal to power with a decisive mandate,” Rai said.

Kailash Gehlot, another senior minister in the Delhi government and a potential candidate for the Chief Minister position, endorsed Atishi’s appointment, stating that her selection had unanimous support from the party. “Everyone agreed that Atishi was the right choice for this role,” Gehlot remarked.

Kejriwal’s resignation comes after his release on bail from Tihar Jail in connection with a corruption case linked to the Delhi Excise Policy scam. He resigned to clear his name and urged for early elections as a means to demonstrate his integrity. “A re-election will serve as a certificate of my honesty,” Kejriwal declared. The Supreme Court, while granting his bail, imposed certain conditions, including prohibiting him from making public comments on the case and requiring his attendance at all trial court hearings unless officially excused.

Atishi’s appointment as interim Chief Minister marks a new chapter for the AAP as they gear up for the next election cycle.
