Historic Chennai Building Restored for Registration Department at ₹9.85 Crore
At George Town, Chennai, a historic building has been renovated at a cost of ₹9.85 crore to house the Registration Department’s offices. The Honorable Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration, Mr. P. Moorthy, and the Honorable Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments, Mr. P.K. Sekar Babu, inaugurated the facility by lighting the ceremonial lamp under the guidance of the Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
Today (10.03.2025), in George Town, Chennai, the ministers inaugurated the offices of the Chennai North District Registrar (Administration), District Registrar (Audit) No. 1, Sub-Registrar, and Assistant Treasury Officer (Archives) within this historic building to commemorate the heritage of the Registration Department.
The historic building, owned by the Registration Department, is over 160 years old and is located on Rajaji Road, George Town, Chennai. Constructed in 1864 with Indo-Saracenic architectural influence, it is of great historical significance. The structure includes a Madras Terrace Roof at the front and a Mangalore Tiled Roof at the rear, spanning a total area of 24,908 square feet.
After years of deterioration, the government undertook the restoration of this heritage building with an allocation of ₹9.85 crore. The renovation has now been completed, and the facility has been officially inaugurated for public use by the Honorable Ministers.
The event was attended by Additional Chief Secretary of the Commercial Taxes and Registration Department, Mr. Kumar Jayant, IAS; Inspector General of Registration, Mr. Dinesh Ponraj Oliver, IAS; Chennai District Collector, Ms. Rashmi Siddharth Jagadeesh, IAS; local representatives, government officials, and the general public.
