Hamas to Release US-Israeli Soldier Held Since October 2023
Hamas has confirmed the planned release of Aidan Alexander, a dual US-Israeli citizen who was taken captive during the October 7, 2023 attacks. According to a leading news channel, Alexander was serving as an Israeli soldier at the time of his abduction.
The move appears to be a unilateral gesture by Hamas aimed at the United States. A statement from the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said, “The US has informed Israel that Hamas intends to release soldier Aidan Alexander as a goodwill gesture towards the Americans, without any conditions or anything in return.”
The statement also noted that the United States expects further negotiations on the broader release of hostages, based on the framework previously proposed by US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff. This framework has already been accepted by Israel, and preparations are underway should the plan move forward.
The discussions around Alexander’s release were reportedly conducted directly between US officials and Hamas, without Israeli involvement. This has sparked some frustration within the Israeli government. US officials responded by stating they do not require permission to negotiate for the release of American citizens held in Gaza.
Public opinion in Israel remains critical of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of the hostage crisis. Many believe he is putting his political interests above the lives of the 58 hostages who are still being held.
Former US President Donald Trump, who is scheduled to visit the region on Tuesday, announced the news on his Truth Social account. “I am pleased to announce that Aidan Alexander, an American citizen held hostage since October 2023, will be returning to his family,” Trump wrote. He thanked all parties involved, including mediators from Qatar and Egypt, for their efforts in what he called a step toward ending the brutal war.
“Hopefully this is the first of the final steps needed to end this conflict. I look forward to the day we can celebrate peace and the return of all hostages,” he added.
The release of Alexander may signal renewed momentum in hostage negotiations and efforts toward de-escalation in the region.
