“Wah Umkhrah Revival: Meghalaya’s Urban Makeover Initiative”
SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has unveiled an ambitious Rs 39 crore project to rejuvenate and beautify the Wah Umkhrah waterfront. This transformative initiative aims to enhance urban aesthetics, boost tourism appeal, and preserve the ecological balance of the riverbank. The project integrates modern amenities while maintaining environmental sustainability, setting a benchmark for urban revitalization in the region.
Speaking at the project’s launch, CM Sangma emphasized the multifaceted benefits of the beautification efforts. “This project will not only enhance the riverfront’s beauty but also establish a central hub for recreational, cultural, and social activities,” he said. The initiative is expected to attract more visitors, thereby stimulating growth in the local tourism industry and creating new economic opportunities, particularly in the hospitality and service sectors.
Addressing the challenges of maintaining river cleanliness, Sangma stressed the importance of a holistic approach. “Beautification efforts must go hand in hand with cleaning and maintaining the river,” he noted. The project’s scope includes restoring the ecological balance of the Wah Umkhrah river and aligning modern infrastructure with environmental preservation goals, ensuring sustainable development.
As the waterfront beautification project prepares to commence, Sangma expressed optimism about its long-term benefits. “This initiative is not merely about beautification,” he concluded. “It’s about fostering sustainable growth and preserving our natural resources.” He called for community support to ensure the project’s success, reflecting Meghalaya’s commitment to balancing modern development with environmental stewardship and setting a precedent for future urban planning initiatives in the region.
