Fisheries Revolution in the District under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana Economic Transformation of Farmers and Fisherfolk
Raipur, January 2026 : The effective implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) has laid a strong foundation for a fisheries revolution across all districts of the state. Through this scheme, significant and positive changes are being witnessed in the lives of farmers and fisher families. By adopting modern technologies, fish production capacity has increased manifold, creating new opportunities for income generation and employment.
Increased Fish Production through Modern Technologies
Under the scheme, initiatives such as cage culture, pond biofloc systems, and the construction of new ponds have been actively promoted. In the district, 21 cage units have been installed in mines and reservoirs for fish farming, enabling higher production even with limited water resources.
Training and Essential Support to Fisherfolk
To disseminate knowledge of modern fish farming techniques, training has been provided to 1,900 fisherfolk in Rajnandgaon district. In addition, fisher families have been supplied with essential inputs such as fish seed, nets, ice boxes, motorcycles, and pickup vehicles. Affordable and easy credit facilities are also being extended to fisherfolk through the Kisan Credit Card scheme.
Rajnandgaon Moving Towards Self-Reliance in Fish Seed Production
To boost fish seed production, two new hatcheries have been constructed in Rajnandgaon district. With this initiative, the district is progressing steadily towards self-reliance in fish seed production. As a result, fish seed production has increased by 20 percent, while overall fish production has recorded a growth of 29 percent.
Large-Scale Construction of Ponds and Rearing Tanks
For fish seed production and rearing, three fishery farms have been established in the district. Additionally, new ponds and rearing tanks have been constructed on farmers’ private land across 148 hectares at a cost of ₹590.166 lakh, further strengthening fisheries infrastructure.
Growth in Employment and Social Security
Fish farming has generated more than 2,500 employment opportunities in the district. Under the scheme, 11,471 fisher beneficiaries have been provided free accident insurance, 1,900 beneficiaries have received training, and 450 beneficiaries have been supplied with fishing nets, ice boxes, and fish seed.
Transformation of the Fisheries Sector in Two Years
Over the past two years, the successful implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana has completely transformed the fisheries sector in the district. The rise in income of farmers and fisherfolk, creation of new employment opportunities, and continuous growth in fish production clearly reflect the success and impact of the scheme.
